(From Carl Adkins, Middle Tennessee Council, per Jim Parham)

Middle Tennessee Council Policy on Local Tour Permits

Local Tour Permits - This application must be filled out with the Council Office two weeks prior to the scheduled event.

When do you need to fill out a Tour Permit:

  1. If you are traveling more than 50 miles from your meeting place (one way).
  2. You do not need to fill out a permit if you are attending an event on Council-owned property, or a function such as Boxwell Summer Camp, Cub or Webelos Resident Camp at Boxwell, Eagle Scout and Volunteer Recognition Reception, Council Jamboree, Grimes or Parish.
  3. If you are a Cub Scout Pack that is going on an overnight camping trip, regardless of how far your trip is, you must file with the Council Office a Local Tour Permit. The campout must be on Council property or an approved camp site and a BALOO trained leader in attendance.
  4. Review of application is designated to one person by Scout Executive filling the above parameters.

One of the major ongoing service projects of The Order of the Arrow is to promote camping among youth and adult members of the Boy Scouts of America.  A number of years ago, Robin Armistead (Eagle, Troop 516) created a guide to places to camp and hike in Tennessee for the Wa-Hi-Nasa Lodge of the OA.  That guide has been updated and is available as a PDF file from the Wa-Hi-Nasa website.  Although it's a large document (68 pages), it is a wonderful resource for day hikes, weekend campouts, backpacking, canoeing, and longer treks.  It contains basic information, maps, descriptions of facilities, suggested activities, and contact information for 24 different places in Tennessee.  Try downloading and printing a copy to give your Patrol Leaders' Council for their fall planning session.

Climb Nashville:  With over 50 ropes and 13,000 square feet of space, Climb Nashville is an excellent opportunity for indoor fun.  They offer 2 hour climbing blocks as well as a longer, more expensive session intended to fulfill the requirements for the Climbing merit badge.  An overnight lock-in is also available.  This activity is appropriate for Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Venture Crews.

Adventure Science Center (Nashville):  Looking for somewhere to take those Cub Scouts?  A day at the Adventure Science Center could be just the thing.  You could even get your Webelos excited about earning the Scientist pin.  For groups of 30 or more, there are overnight camp-ins with the programs provided by museum staff.  This activity is best for Cub Scouts but can be enjoyed by Scouts of all ages.

bullet

Customs House Museum (Clarksville):  This one's a little closer to home but still loaded with good programs for Cub Scouts and excellent exhibits for Scouts and adults of all ages.  The museum provides summer programs for participants ranging in age from 3 to 14.
