A lot of times, our Scouting families don't know or aren't aware of the bigger
picture of Scouting as a national and international youth movement. Our
trained adults, especially Cubmasters and Scoutmasters are key elements in
teaching the families about Scouting, not just at the level of individual Scouts
and individual achievements but overall as well. After all, families have
ample opportunity to watch their sons practice with a team, play against other
teams, and share in the enthusiasm of the particular sport at a national and
often an international level. We should do everything that we can to
communicate about Scouting at all three of these levels. I doubt that
we're going to be picked up by ESPN anytime soon but that shouldn't stop us from
getting the word out about how awesome Scouting is.
A Scoutmaster's Minute is part of a Troop meeting, usually just before the
closing ceremony, that is set aside for comments from the Scoutmaster to the
Scouts. Typically this is a moment when the Scoutmaster tries to provide a
teaching example of how Scouting applies to the life of Scouts or how Scouting
has impacted the lives of others. Send your favorite Scoutmaster's Minute
to the WebCommish. Submissions will be posted on this page.
I've never head of a Cubmaster's Minute but think it would be a fine
tradition to begin. I welcome suggestions for Cubmaster's Minutes and will
post them here as well.
